Abstract

The company Philipp Boecker + Wender Stahl GmbH & Co. KG (BWS) produces strips from stainless steels and special alloys at its precision 20-high single-stand cold rolling mill in Hagen-Hohenlimburg. These strips have width up to 400 mm, thickness from 4 mm to 50 μm and (in accordance to special orders) – to 20 μm. The new developed optical system VTLG provides accuracy ±1 μm and meets the strict requirements for cold rolling of extra-fine strips. Experience of operation of this system by BWS company has confirmed its possibility to replace conventional measuring systems even in very severe operating conditions. Additionally this system is completely separated from alloying, does not make any damage to strip surface and allows to provide strip thickness measurements in transverse direction to the rolling line. In its turn, it will help to minimize the expenses for technical maintenance and to rise operating performance of the rolling mill.
