Abstract

The article presents results of a research project on chemical separation of industrial manganese ore using as reagents a mixture of nitric acid and sodium chloride, as well as solutions of sulfuric acid with added metallic iron, which enables one to dispense with precalcination known to generate unwanted emissions of CO2. Leaching slimes by nitric acid-sodium sulfide solution at 90 °C for 2 hours, given a solid-liquid ratio of 1 : 2, yielded solutions containing 62.9 % g/dm3 of Mn with Mn solution recovery equal to 78%. It has been demonstrated that after reduction by leaching in sulfuric acid solution containing metallic iron at a temperature raised to 90 °C, the Mn solution recovery increases to 91.2 %. Based on the results of the above research project the authors offer a flowsheet for processing of manganiferous slimes, which requires reduction leaching by sulfuric acid solution with metallic iron.
