Urbanisation puts mining on top of African agenda
04.02.2013, 17:08More people in the world will be urbanised in the next 30 years than were born before 1939. This rapid development will place a huge burden on the earth’s resources. In order to satisfy this demand, explorers and miners are looking increasingly to Africa in order to identify mineral resources.
Building on the success of its highly-respected Nordic events, IntierraRMG is delighted to partner with the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) and UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) to host the Mining on Top: Africa - London Summit. This event forms part of IntierraRMG’s annual Mining on Top conference series.
Mining on Top: Africa will encourage dialogue between all stakeholders; government officials, senior representatives of mining companies, investors and service providers. Furthermore, the Summit will investigate how mining companies can do more to improve the social and economic outcomes of their activities.
The expectations of the private sector and those of African host nations appear more divergent in mining than almost any other economic arena. Whilst indigenous peoples expect social and economic development from the exploitation of their resources, mining companies highlight the huge investment required in order to monetise mineral assets that are otherwise economically worthless.
Commenting on the increasing industry interest in Africa, IntierraRMG Managing Director, Peter Rossdeutscher said: “We are delighted to be partnering with the CBC and UKTI to present this event. With attention focused on African opportunities and complexities at an all-time high, the Mining on Top: Africa - London Summit is a pivotal event on this year’s calendar.”
One of Africa's most successful mining entrepreneurs, Sir Sam Jonah, the Executive Chairman of South African equity fund, Jonah Capital, previously president of Ashanti Goldfields, will deliver a keynote presentation at the Summit. Other key note speakers include Professor Magnus Ericsson, Founder of Raw Materials Group; Anthony Hodge, President International Council on Metals and Mining; Ignacio del Calonje, Principal Investment Officer International Finance Corporation; and Abel Malinga, Divisional Executive Industrial Development Corporation.
The Commonwealth Mining Network, which was launched at Commonwealth Business Forum 2011, will hold its inaugural round-table meeting prior to the Forum on the 24th May 2013. UKTI will also launch its Mining Guide at the Mining on Top: Africa - London Summit.
Mining on Top: Africa – London Summit will be held at One Great George Street, Westminster, London, 24-26 June 2013.
