Effective risk management in production and supervisory activities is a critical functional element in the modern industry. The analysis of risk management techniques shows that the methods of risk localization and transference are a promising approach to the production risk control in hazardous operation areas. The use of these methods in risk description requires a distinct identification of the risk factors. The main objective of the studies in the field of production risk assessment is the development of efficient risk quantification methods with regard to the specifics of mining practices. The risk-engineering approaches to the assessment of probabilities of accidents connected with the geotechnical conditions of opencast and underground mining are reviewed in this article. The method of making checklists using scoring models is described. The approaches to risk probability quantification using simulation modeling and key parameters of safe operation are substantiated. The research implemented jointly with the Institute for Strategic Risk Analysis—ISAR in combination with the geotechnical supervision of mining by ALROSA has found out that the use of the simulation modeling methods together with the quantification of geotechnical risks using key parameters of safe operation is a promising trend of shaping a risk management strategy for mines. The main advantages of this approach for company management is the possibility to obtain a more accurate and well-founded evaluation of probability of an adverse event and its consequences for a mine.
