The article covers the current problems of mineral processing in Russia. The share of highly processed mineral products in the exports of the Russian Federation does not exceed 10% in total; in nonferrous metallurgy, which exports three quarters of its products, only 22% of metals undergo further processing. The focus of Russian enterprises on raw materials exports is rooted in the established structure of the global economy, where Russia has acquired the role of a resource supplier, and in the lack of high value-added mineral and metallurgical products, which may be due to a lack of investment and necessary advanced technologies at the Russian mining and metallurgical enterprises. The low investment attractiveness of deposit development projects in the Russian Federation for the business may be reasonably explained by their complexity, high capital intensity and the long lead times. Russian producers export a significant amount of lowvalue mining products, which inevitably leads to losses for the national economy. However, this situation forms a certain basis for the implementation of advanced processing of mineral raw materials. Introduction of a national policy for the development of the mineral resource complex requires a sound development strategy, including the measures required to introduce advanced processing technologies for the mining raw materials, which will eventually protect the Russia’s geopolitical interests on the world market.
