Blast furnace plants are still required to economically reduce their coke consumption and to substitute coke by low-priced fuels. The pros and cons of the use of pulverized lignite or coal blends have been described in the literature on many occasions. The newly developed in situ mixing technology has been tested in the framework of largescale industrial testings and nowadays minimizes the disadvantages of the pulverized lignite injection and can be successfully integrated in the existing units. Furthermore, considering the market conditions, it enables the flexible use of this application in the blast furnace, due to properties and competitive price of lignite. The intensive process of mixing and injection minimizes physical and chemical disadvantages of this energy carrier for iron melting. Both concepts presented in the paper have been successfully realized at the blast furnaces No. 1 and No. 5A at the works of ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH in Germany. They allowed to make quick and aimed eff ect on the blast furnace practice. Variation of the heat balance can be reacted by rise or lowering of the part of pulverized lignite. This project has been put into practice with support of “Otto von Guericke” union for industrial researches.
