Abstract

New directives from Brussels regarding air basin protection are to be realized still. The paper observes discussion in the framework of the round table "Steel" held by Dr. Gunnar Still, corporate advisor on environment protection at ThyssenKrupp AG. The effect of European Commission regulations on the iron and steel industry, the concept of the German Federal government as well as possibilities of their realization and protection boundaries of the air basin on the example of HKM Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH are observed. The reports have been prepared by Marianne Wenning, the director of of the direction of European Commission environment protection (entitled “Quality of life, water and air”); Dr. Norbert Salomon, head of the section “Protection from harmful emissions, equipment and transport safety” at the Federal Ministry on protection of environment, nature and safety of nuclear reactors”; and Dr. Eng. Rolf Höffken, head of the technical department at HKM company. It is concluded that further increase of the technical level of production facilities is not always connected with lowering of harmful emissions, is not therefore a mandatory purpose and is hardly economically efficient at present time.
