The submarines with cases from titanium and aluminum alloys and nonmetallic materials have been created in the USA. However, the vast majority of submarines are constructed from carbon steels. The low-alloyed steel of the HTS brand created in 1943 were widely used in construction of diesel electric and fi rst nuclear submarines. Since the beginning of the 1950-ies, on the instructions of Naval Forces, development of HY series steels with increased mechanical properties has been started, especial attention has been paid to yield strength. Steel of this type has undergone testing at US Albacore submarine. Its application allowed to reduce the mass of the strong case of the ship approximately by 30%. Information about the steels of HY series, their chemical composition, mechanical properties, technology of production, heat treatment and welding modes is provided in the article. The review displays that possibilities of improving the properties of construction steels only via their alloying are fi nished practically and at present time this direction is not expedient. It is shown that development of shipbuilding steels in the USA is similar in general with development of Russian shipbuilding steels. Owing to strictly limited chemical composition and thermal mechanical processing conditions, fine steel structure can be achieved and high density of austenite dislocation is inherited. In its turn, it provide increase of steel strength, while fine-grained structure allows to reserve high strength to brittle destruction. This information can be useful for students, graduate students and lecture of state educational institution of higher professional education of metallurgical specialties, and also metallurgical engineers and employees of research institutes.
