Abstract

Electric energy consumption at an iron and steel works can be compared with requirements of a small town. Therefore, metallurgical plants operate permanently with the ultimate load from the efficiency point of view, and even small electric energy price rise can lead to substantial consequences. However, subsequent elevation of prices on metal products at international markets can't be considered as solution of this problem. It is shown that the control of energy flows and optimization of production expenses are necessary methods for correspondence to arising additional challenges in the fi eld of environmental safety. Energy Advisor software system developed by SMS Siemag AG can be the base for this approach. International innovations at steel market and connected power engineering expenses forces necessity to act. E. g., so-called "power engineering overturn" can provide both chances and hazards for iron and steel metallurgy. From one side, energetic reform opens new markets and application areas for this material, but from the other side, it will be accompanied with additional investments. It is concluded that the concept of power saving and corresponding systems (such as Energy Advisor) can connect ecology and economics in rational way.
