Coal mines of Karaganda increasingly use strata bolting that, as compared with steel frame support, is simpler manufactured, lower labor intensive and enables reduction of time of support setting and cut-down of cost of drivage. At the same time, strata bolting in the conditions of longwall mining in Karaganda coal mines has a few constraining factors. In particular, for the aim of ventilation, during preparation of a production area, diagonal ventilation cross cuts are driven in advance of production heading; their stability is affected by stoping and the influence grows as the longwall face approaches the development headings. In connection with this, the research was carried out in order to substantiate the conditions for strata bolting application in development headings of Karaganda coal mines. The article describes the results of the studies into the application and conditions of strata bolting in development headings in the influence zone of stoping in longwall coal mining in Karaganda mines. The numerical modeling of rock mass stress–strain state and the in situ observations over surrounding rock mass displacements in the zone of abutment pressure generated by approaching operating longwall face yielded the character and dynamics of deformation processes and made it possible to substantiate calculation schemes and advise on the strata bolting application conditions so that to ensure mine safety. The research findings confirm applicability of strata bolting in ventilation cross cuts in the influence zone of abutment pressure due to stoping under condition of systematic monitoring of deformations in mine workings and early decision-making on engineering solutions concerned with supplemental support.
