Chernye Metally

The section "Development of metallurgy in Russia and CIS" is opened by publication "Study of usage of accelerated cooling of rolled sections with forced rotation of cooling agent" by V. Trusov and M. Zinkevich. It describes the method of transition of cooling agent in the units for accelerated cooling of rolled sections. Experimental unit for thermal strengthening of reinforced sections has been developed; it allowed to achieve preset heating temperature and is equipped by the feeder of rolled semiproduct (pinch roll unit) and control-measuring devices for monitoring of variations of hydrodynamic parameters in cooling unit and final temperature of accelerated cooling.

Another article in this section is devoted to the developed (by G. Rubin, M. Chukin, G. Gun, D. Zakirov and I. Gun) theory of complex qualitative estimation of quality (qualimetry) for metalware products and technologies for their production. This theory is based on the common constructive principle of structuring properties of metalware products and systematic approach to estimation of quality of finished products and technological processes.

A. Timofeev, I. Leushin and Yu. Zinovyev prepared the article "Providing of cold resistance of high-duty castings from high-strength cast iron" where they have examined the combined influence of complex modifier and micro-addition of boron on the properties of castings of high-strength iron was researched, especially, their influence on toughness values in the area of working negative temperatures.

The problems of iron and steel making are researched in the two publications. The first one, "Selective waste gas recirculation system for sintering plants" by J. Reidetscläger, H. Stiasny, S. Hötzinger, Ch. Aichinger and A. Fulgencio observed latest developments in sinter technology especially concerning relevant environmental issues. It is shown that the Siemens VAI selective waste gas recirculation system can be installed in existing or in greenfield plants, as 100 % add-on or fully integrated, whileanother off-gas recirculation system, in combination with the Meros (Maximized Emission Reduction of Sintering) process it represents one of the best available techniques for a cleaner sintering process.

A. S. de Castro presents the design of the new raw material handling and its ramp-up on the example of ThyssenKrupp CSA new steel mill complex in Santa Cruz/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for a yearly production of 5 million t of slabs. Based on a cause analysis of the route, an economic and fast solution for elimination of the discovered bottleneck concerning the blast furnace fines was designed and implemented.

Five papers are published in the section "Continuous casting": "Enhanced clean steel tapping on BOF vessels at Salzgitter Flachstahl" by A. Berghöfer and B. Steiner, "Improved casting properties through optimized submerged entry nozzle" by O. Wiens, W. Moβner, M. Reifferscheid, N. Vogl, G. Nitzl, G. Hackl, Shung-Sheng Kao and Hsin-Chin Kuo, " Innovative monitoring techniques for better control of slab solidification" by T. Lamp, H. Köchner, S. Schiewe, D. Kirsch, T. Schramm, N. R. Puvvada, P. Janβen, "The tundish as a metallurgical reactor" by P. Tassot, N. Reichert, C. Willoughby and Ch. Turrel as well as "Improved bearing for guide rolls of continuous casting machines" by N. A. Los, J. H. Rodhes and G. Daberger.

These five papers described the new converter gate, in operation by Salzgitter Flachstahl, was designed to upgrade the tapping technology for converters to a higher level in terms of clean steel, productivity, yield and availability — at reduced costs (1); the submerged entry nozzle having a considerable influence was put by SMS Siemag and RHI as a target of developing a submerged entry nozzle that satisfies the whole range of requirements (2) and the continuous characterization of the mould flux cover on the meniscus helps to stabilize and optimize the initial solidification in the mould with the strand surface temperature monitored after the individual cooling zones inside the secondary cooling area (3), a new system, the porous annular well block for injecting argon, that has been developed to achieve a high efficiency in floating out larger inclusions and decreasing the hydrogen and nitrogen content in the steel (4) and the results of commercial testings and investigations of bearing construction in the conditions of Siemens VAI and Timken companies (5).
