Chernye Metally

The October issue of the journal is almost entirely devoted to the works of the authors - representatives of the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. According to the advisor to the rector of the university, readers got an additional opportunity to learn about the role of chemical technology in the development of ferrous metallurgy.

The Metallurgy and Heat Treatment section presents the thermal cycling process, which made it possible to apply the method of ultrasonic testing to assess the degree of wear and destruction of bolts made of 07KhI6N6 steel. The possibility of using steels of grades 08Kh18T1, 12Kh17 and AISI 430 with protective coatings as current collectors of solid oxide fuel cells is shown. A model of the process of dissolution of iron oxide Fe3O4 in an acidic medium is presented, which can be used in practical applications to optimize the processes associated with the dissolution of iron in acidic media.

The Coating and Surface Treatment section covers the protective and decorative treatment of low carbon steels. A solution is presented that allows, in a few minutes, to form protective-decorative black coatings on the surface of low-alloy steels, which are not inferior in protective ability to coatings obtained from a standard alkaline solution of black oxidation. New additives to electrolytes are described that provide an extension of the range of operating current densities, an increase in the service life of electrolytes and eliminate the risks associated with the use of imported additives.

The Refractories and Ceramics section presents a porous permeable ceramic material based on silicon carbide for filters for cleaning hot waste gases of various metallurgical units. The possibility of obtaining heat-resistant ceramics from a powder system based on ZrO2 with a controlled structure of particles and pore space for use in contact with melts of steels and alloys is considered.

The Industrial Ecology section describes experimental data on the electroflotation extraction of iron (III) hydroxide from aqueous solutions of various compositions in the presence of surfactants, organic compositions. Calculations of economic efficiency showed that an increase in recovery by 10–15% reduces the load on microfiltration modules, the number of regeneration cycles, and the discharge of contaminated filter washing solutions.

The From the History of Metallurgy section contains the first part of the article describing the contribution of sectoral research institutes of the People's Commissariat of the tank industry to the improvement of metallurgical, welding and machining production in the tank industry of the USSR during the Great Patriotic War.

In the Chronicle section, Ore and Metals Publishing House, the editorial staff and the editorial board of the Ferrous Metals journal express their condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Konstantin Nikolaevich Vdovin.
