Directions of metallurgical production development have been considered, in particular, the two main ones that have formed in recent decades and reflect the main directions of development of the world economy: in developing countries - the construction of large-capacity enterprises with a full metallurgical cycle, in developed countries – the construction of mini-metallurgical plants. The dynamics of world steel production from the 1970s to 2018 is presented. The analysis of the world market of metallurgical equipment in terms of trends in the development of metallurgical production is given. The structure of the global equipment market in terms of profitability of leading companies and the volume of completed orders is shown. The challenges of domestic metallurgy modernization, caused by the peculiarities of development, structure, difficulties in entering the market economy, etc. are examined. A list of main investment projects implemented in Russian ferrous metallurgy in 2000-2012 is given. Volumes of production of metallurgical equipment in large domestic companies in 2005—2015, the share of Russian enterprises in the market of metallurgical equipment are presented. A forecast is proposed for the development of metallurgical engineering in Russia until 2030 according to an innovative scenario. The main areas of activity of NP Metallurgmash, whose creation can be considered as a kind of response to external challenges, as well as an example of a corporate association, are presented.
