Stable and accident-free operation of metallurgical equipment has essential influence on the work of iron and steel plant. The laboratories of refractories, of development and testing of refractory materials of the Central Quality Laboratory at Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works investigate permanently possibilities of increase of resistance of refractory lining as well as lowering of specific consumption and expenses. This paper describes improvement of composition and properties of refractory materials, optimization of lining laying scheme for metallurgical furnaces and rise their wear resistance. E.g., composition and physical-chemical properties of pilot gunning mixes (TMPKh grade) are analyzed, expected economical effect based on usage of gunning mix TMPKh-1 for DSA-32 furnace is calculated. It was concluded that usage of gunning mix with improved properties for DSA-32 furnace allowed to lower expenses by 5.6 roubles per 1 steel ton. Features of refractory usage and lining for furnace hearth and steel pouring ladles and tundishes are examined. Workability of pilot refractories are compared and it was noted that average wear resistance of pilot lining made 53 melts, while serial lining has resistance as large as 50 melts.
