Abstract

Techcom GmbH (Germany) together with National University of Science and Technology “MISiS” (Russia) have developed and patented the submerged entry nozzle for casting of special steels. This new submerged entry nozzle is equipped with protective sealing ring that is fixed on the lower external side of the article over the fan-shaped exit hole. As a result, melt enters mould as molten stream and consequently it is retarded by its axial component. Submerged entry nozzle has been tested in industrial conditions for casting of bearing steels, rail steels and structural steels. Usage of the new submerged entry nozzle allowed to decrease melt contamination with non-metallic inclusions by 2–3 times and to improve qualitative parameters of microstructure by 2 times. It has great importance in casting of steels with strict requirements for segregation and non-metallic inclusions. In this connection, Byelorussian Steel Works, specialized in production of high-quality steels for rope manufacture, has developed and fabricated industrial sample of submerged entry nozzle of such kind. Large-scale testings have been conducted in June and July 2012; they were directed on determination of influence of speed lowering of melt stream in a mould on heterogeneity of carbon distribution in high-carbon highquality steel for rope production and on decrease of content on nonmetallic inclusions.
