The most prospective development tendencies of construction of electric arc furnaces are observed based on data analysis from national and foreign literature and on the model of electric arc furnace developed by the authors. It is shown that extensive way of increase of productivity of electric arc furnaces has exhausted its possibilities and the new qualitative breakthrough in the development of electric arc furnaces can be achieved owing to specialization of construction of the furnace and improvement of the melting technology taking into account kind of used charge materials and ways of their charging. Different ways of increase of productivity of electric arc furnaces are analyzed: injection of oxygen, natural gas and carbon powder; replacing of the part of charge material by hot iron and direct reduced iron; usage of continuous and semi-continuous charging with closed roof; usage of physical and chemical energy of waste gases for charge heating; designing of furnaces with high walls for single charging. Optimization of this construction in the conditions when technical possibilities of the electric furnace unit (EPU) are restricted, can be applied to the following parameters: correlation between radius and depth of the furnace should be in the range 1.3–2.2 for up-to-date high-production furnaces; height of walls should be depended on charge composition; relationship between EPU parameters - transformer capacity and average intensity of oxygen blowing should be chosen based on charge composition; forced metal stirring should be used for lowering of consumption of resources and materials in the case of applying lowcarbon charge material (steel scrap).
